Dog Lovers Of The World Unite!

American Kennel Club gears up for the annual Westminster Dog Show, naming the most popular dog breeds in the United States. Full Story: It's the year of the big dog according to officials at the American Kennel Club. The group has released its annual list of most popular dogs, and the top five ranked pooches are all larger breeds. Kennel Club Communications director Lisa Peterson said pint-sized pooches may be falling out of fashion. [Lisa Peterson, Communications, American Kennel Club]: "Larger breeds are gaining popularity while smaller breeds are tumbling off the list. And what we found is that the bulldog has muscled his way up to the number five position. And he hasn't been there in quite a few years, decades in fact. Also on the list, the Rottweiler jumped from number ten to number nine and the Dachshund went to number 10. Also the Golden Retriever, a large breed, has gone up to number three displacing the Beagle, which has gone down to number four." Peterson thinks the shift from small to big is because more families' want to own dogs that can play with children. This year's annual Westminster Dog Show will be held in New York on February 12th and 13th, and will no doubt feature some "ruff" competition.
