James Nares, Street (2012)

Nares, a British-born painter, filmmaker and performance artist who has called New York home since 1974, presents a hypnotic paean to his adopted city, titled, simply, Street. Filmed from a moving van using a high-speed camera, the video employs slow-motion cinematography to capture Gotham's pedestrian traffic in all of its magisterial flow. The result is both uncanny and mesmerizing. As a way of contextualizing the piece, Street is accompanied by two galleries of objects, spanning the years 3000 B.C. to 1987 and selected by the artist from the Met's collection.
